Trekinetic: one day, every terrain

The films

Short-form

Made for the feed.

The starting position

Trekinetic build the K2 Plus One, a manual all-terrain wheelchair made in Britain and priced at around £6,000. It is a serious piece of engineering, and the company’s stated ambition is to be the Porsche of the wheelchair industry.

What justifies the price is the hardest thing to put in a specification. The chair is built for ground that stops most wheelchairs: sand, rough paths, pebbles, puddles, uneven hillside. Their slogan is “Go anywhere, together”.

Trekinetic did not want a walkthrough of the components. They asked for a lifestyle film: real places, a real family, and nobody left waiting at the top of the path.

Every terrain, one day

A film about a chair that goes anywhere has to show it going anywhere, and that set the whole production problem. We needed every ground type the chair is built for, close enough together to cover properly between one sunrise and one sunset.

We scouted a coastal region of England and found a workable circle. A beach for the sand, a seaside town, historic hills, and a bike park with several surfaces in one place. Nothing sat next door to anything else, but the entire circuit fitted inside a 30 to 40 minute drive, which is what made a single day possible.

The running order was fixed before we arrived, because with that much driving there is no room to make decisions on location. Two camera operators and one photographer, carrying the kit on foot wherever the vehicles ran out of road.

Planning it that tightly bought something else as well. The chair is customisable, and its components can be changed as a child grows, which is a large part of what a family is actually buying. That is far easier to show across a day of real ground than to explain in a paragraph.

What came out of the day

A full product film, six social pieces and a set of photography, from one day and three people.

The stills went further than the website and social channels: Trekinetic printed them at large format for exhibition stands. Photography that holds up at that size came from having a photographer working alongside the camera team on the day, rather than being sent back for it afterwards.

What this kind of day is good for

The difficulty in this brief was geography, and it was solved before anybody left home. If a product only makes sense to someone once they have seen it used properly, the location plan is where most of the value gets decided.

Two operators and a photographer covered a product film, six social cuts and exhibition-grade stills in a single day on location. That is the kind of day we plan for.
